Photo of the Day: TVO workers hit the picket lines
As TVO workers walked off the job, photographer Spencer Colby was on hand to catch the tenor and emotion of the job action.
In the latest in a series of high-profile strikes — from the Writers Guild of America to Metro grocery store workers — employees at TVO walked off the job Monday.
About 70 journalists, producers, and education workers employed by Ontario’s public broadcaster are involved in the strike. Major issues include compensation and contract work.
In a story on the topic, Canadian Press reporter Rosa Saba summed up the job action like this:
One of the main sticking points is the use of contracts to fill permanent positions, the union previously said. It has also said the wages on offer are well below what’s needed for workers to catch up to the surging cost of living.
Once the strike began, TVO staffers picketed and handed out fliers in front of the company’s Yonge St. offices wearing T-shirts reading “TVO Kids & Journalism & Docs & Diplomas. Fund TVO Like It matters.”
Photographer Spencer Colby was on hand to snap photos for CP, including the one at the top of the page.
