Check vote counts as they come in on election night.
The 2023 Toronto mayoral by-election is upon us.
By the end of Monday night, the city will have its first new mayor since John Tory was elected to the job on Oct. 27, 2014.
Over 100 candidates are running to lead the city through to the next scheduled municipal election in 2026. A total of 1,445 voting locations will be open across the city until 8:00 p.m., and results will pour in quickly after that.
Check the map accompanying this article after 8:00 p.m. to see live auto-updating results on the race.
Watching turnout
Who wins the right to be Toronto’s next mayor isn’t the only thing worth watching Monday.
Voter turnout hit an all-time low last October for the larger municipal election, when Tory won his third term.
Election | Votes cast | % elig. voters |
---|---|---|
2022 | 563,124 | 29.66 |
2018 | 769,044 | 40.90 |
2014 | 991,754 | 54.67 |
2010 | 827,723 | 50.55 |
2006 | 597,754 | 39.30 |
That said, the City saw positive signs on this front during advance voting between June 8 and 13, when nearly 130,000 Torontonians cast a ballot — a 12 per cent increase from last year’s election.
